In contrast to anabolic steroids (used by “bodybuilders”), corticosteroids are used in inflammatory conditions for their anti–inflammatory effects. They have a rapid onset of action, and profoundly affect many parts of the immune system as well as most other body systems. Corticosteroids are a cornerstone of treating most types of vasculitis, and are often used in combination with other immunosuppressive medications. Many of the side–effects of steroids are predictable. All are related to: 1) the amount of steroid a patient takes in his/her daily dose, and 2) the length of time the patient remains on the medication. We emphasize that not all side–effects occur in all patients. Despite the numerous potential side–effects of corticosteroids listed below, their introduction into patient care 50 years ago revolutionized the treatment of many diseases, including vasculitis.

I would forget people's names immediately upon learning them... Once, I came out of a store and just couldn't remember anything - where I was, what I was doing, nothing... I was taking the same road to my child's school and I would get confused on it. A.) I was getting to where I would lose track of what street I was on... and for the most part I also couldn't remember much about what I did the day before. My doctor prescribed "Sertraline" (the generic name for, I think, Zoloft). Thanks for sharing your story, and how wonderful that it has a happy ending. It is called an "anti-depressant", but I wasn't depressed. per day, and faithfully doing so, my memory - or at least 75% of it - has returned! I no longer worry that I'm developing "early Alzheimer's" (as a friend of my mom's did, and died around my age). It's actually well-known that stress can cause memory loss. Apparently they prescribe "anti-depressants" for anxiety! BUT - you have to wait - they say - about 1 to 3 months for it to start working "fully" (I felt a difference in just 2 weeks! It will pay in the long run if you take it *faithfully* *every day*! But I find it very interesting indeed that an anti-depressant medication mostly cured your memory problems.
